Mid-West 'In Hot Water' Community Seminars

Redmap WA, 06 May 2014.

The Department of Fisheries WA, in conjunction with Redmap, will be holding a series of community seminars in Geraldton and Leeman on the impacts of the 2010/11 marine heatwave on the Mid-West coast.

Fishers, divers and ocean enthusiasts are invited to these free events to hear presentations from marine science experts.

The Mid-West region was at the centre of the WA marine heatwave, with ocean temperatures rising to as much as five degrees Celsius above normal levels. This saw the region experience abalone and fish mortalities, coral bleaching at the Abrolhos and the appearance of more tropical marine species from waters to the north.

The seminar will encourage discussion about the effects of the marine heatwave and ocean warming more broadly on fisheries and marine habitats, and how the community can be involved in reporting on changes in the marine environment through participation in Redmap.

The events will take place at:

• Leeman – Wednesday 14 May at the Leeman Country and Sporting Club from 6:00-8:00pm

• Geraldton – Thursday 15 May at the Western Australian Museum from 6:30–8:30pm

The Geraldton seminar is proudly hosted and supported by the Western Australian Museum – Geraldton. This is a continuation of our partnership with the WA Museum, which provides verifying marine scientists for Redmap.

The Department of Fisheries acknowledges the funding support of the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) and the Australian Government.

Light refreshments will be served and bookings are essential. Please phone the Department’s Geraldton Office on 9920 8400 to RSVP.
