Fishy Tales – Redmap QLD interviews a local fisherman

Martha Brians, Redmap QLD, 14 Oct 2014.

One of the perks of working for Redmap is getting to meet lots of local fishers and divers. One of our loggers in Queensland gives us a look into his fishing life. Richy has been fishing for 26 years and recently logged a Scalloped Hammerhead on Redmap QLD. Here we ask him a few questions about his favourite pastime.

This little hammerhead was caught by Richy Gray and logged on Redmap QLD. This photo is interesting because it shows the nares (sensory holes). Richy said this tough little guy put up a good fight, and he was surprised to see it on the end of the line.

How often do you get to go fishing?

1-2 times a month

What is the best location you've fished?

The blue zones around Lizard Island

What is your favourite fish to catch and why?

Red Emperor, Large Mouth Nannygai and Mangrove Jack - They are a handsome looking fish, challenging and rewarding. Just seeing that red flash of colour breach the water line gets me very excited as a fishermen.

Do you have a favourite moment you can tell us about?

My first Mahi Mahi was a great moment for me. It was an exceptional fighter. There have also been some "one that got away" moments that we don't wish to bring up often. Those moments that mates won't let you forget.
